Chess Champs Academy Crowned as the Online Team Chess Rapid Champions – 2020

“Kh8 and Qg7 checkmate!! The tournament went on up to the last game to give the decision and now Chess Champs Academy is crowned the 1st ever CFSL Online Rapid Women's Team Chess Cup“
That was the words of former national champion Dulan Edirisinghe, describing the winning moment given by Dinushki Premanath who went on to beat her opponent after a tough battle in the very last game of the tournament.
Though this was the winning moment seen by all chess enthusiast all around the world, the toughest battle was won by team captain Thilini Koswatte who went on to beat Women’s Grandmaster GulmiraDauletova from Kazakhstan, while being under pressure because WIM Isha Sharma the star player of the team was beaten by WIM Sachini Ranasinghein a beautiful game of the Sicilian Sveshnikov variation. Saumy Zainab went on to beat former national champion WFM DasuniMendis to seal the round 3 – 1 in favor of the Chess Champs Academy.

The foundation for all of this was when Chirashana Lamahewa manager/coach of Chess Champs Academy brought together some brilliant minds of the country to form a team and battle it out for the top-most crown in the women’s clubs league of Sri Lanka. The core was formed around a set of girls from Girls High School which had 2 former national champions (Dinushki Premanath and Saumy Zainab), an up-and-coming star (Prasansa Premanath), and an experienced national player (Thilini Koswatte). The team was also strengthened by WIM Isha Sharma from India who played unbeaten until the last round.

Earlier during the round-robin stage, the team lead until the last round but a slip up cost them the top-ranking and gave them 3rd place which guaranteed them a place in the semi-finals. In the semifinals, they met the Fischer Girls CC whom they beat 3-1 in the 2nd leg after a drawn 1st leg. Finals were against the strong Passed Pawn Chess Club who fielded 4 national players and a foreign WGM from Kazakhstan. Chess champs again ended up with equal points in the 1st leg and were trailing 1 game down in the second leg when team captain Thilini started to turn the tables on the WGM. Within a few minutes, the round which was more like to be another draw was turned on its head where Chess Champs went on to win the 3 remaining games.
The team's success was all due to the discipline and hard work put in by them. The practice sessions and player preparation is done by Chirashana were instrumental to the championship path. The team got the services of Mr. Minura Munasinghe as the strategist for the tournament and he made some out-of-the-box decisions to give the team an edge with the team orders and player match-ups.

Chess Champs Academy is the brain-child of former national team player Chirahshana Lamahewa, where it has become one of the leading chess academies in Sri Lanka. It is located in the heart of Negombo and is the preferred chess school for a growing number of young chess players. This was the 1st time that the academy went on to play in the national clubs league and it went on to become a championship year for the academy.
Finally, it should be noted that a strong team understanding and a willful set of players backed by a dedicated coach is the best recipe for success. Chess Champs Academy is the best example of it.
